Book Review: Untwine

Untwine was written by Edwidge Danticat and published in 2015. The story focuses on 16 year old Giselle Boyer whose family is falling apart. Her parents are on the brink of divorce and Giselle realizes there is nothing she can do to stop it. Amidst all of the fighting, Giselle knows she can rely on her twin sister, Isabella. Even though there are many negative aspects in their lives, Giselle and Isabella will always have each other.

But after a tragic event occurs, the family is left devastated. Together they must set their previous issues aside and unite to help each other during this difficult time. This novel describes the journey of grief, acceptance, and moving forward.

Through heartbreaking descriptions on grief and acceptance, Danticat shows how a tragic event impacts a family. With every chapter, you will love Giselle’s family and want to learn how they move forward more and more. Untwine is a thought-provoking and inspiring novel about overcoming life’s toughest moments.
