The stage is set on October 3rd and the students flood in to Community Homeroom. It starts with an intense game of musical chairs and Addie Culotta comes out with a win. Community homeroom is a time for the Maryvale community to come together in the theatre. It is when students and teachers make announcements about what’s happening on campus, as well as having fun with our friends with games, songs, and videos!
There are different sections like Hope for Humanity, Devangelization, Maura’s Manners, Big sis advice, Abena’s announcements, and games. First, big sis advice this time was about how to identify toxic friends. Devangelizaton is when Ms. Devan gives us a religious lesson. She also relates it to the life of a Maryvale student or teacher and includes student videos.
I asked Ms. Waugh and Ms. Randisi many questions about what CHR was like when they went here. They said it used to be in the Gym! It was at the end of the day on Wednesdays, which was fun because they would all gather and then get dismissed for the day. She also said, “Anyone could sign up and make announcements, all were given in person because we did not have a projector or anything like that.” I asked why they thought CHR is important. She answered: “I think it helps to build community because everyone has the opportunity to hear about upcoming events and celebrate the accomplishments of others. I love that we are all together in one room as a school community. I think it is a unique experience since it is run by students.” Finally, I asked Ms. Randisi what goes into making CHR and she said, “Lots of planning and organizing! There is a script and a presentation that all needs to be prepared ahead of time. And there needs to be someone to make sure it is not too long or too short.”
I love CHR and it is a great time! I love that it is a little break from school! It is a great thing and I hope you learned more about it. It is something that I look forward to every week!
