This fall, the upper school gathered for a beloved Maryvale tradition: the club fair. The rainy weather did not stop enthusiastic club-goers from advertising; the event was held in the gallery space and served just as big of a hit as in previous years. Tables were set up on both floors due to the overwhelming number of participants. Not only was it a success, but 18 clubs seen at this year’s fair were new for Maryvale students to try. Some included: the Business Club, Crumbl Cookie Club, Cyber and Computer Club, Fashion Club, SAT Prep Club, and Song of the Week Club. Of course, some old favorites stayed such as Model UN, BSU, Mock Trial, CASA, Best Buddies, and Taylor Swift Club. The new additions proved incredibly successful only a few weeks into school. I spoke with Mr. Bailey, a new teacher and leader of the LumberJills club, to hear what all the fuss is about.
Every month, the LumberJills welcome students and teachers to come together for a hot pancake breakfast before heading off to classes. The club has a smaller group of volunteers called the “Board of Flapjacks” who arrive early to set up and make the delicious pancakes. Mr. Bailey says that LumberJills, “embrace the slogan, ‘Building Community Through Pancakes’” and, “believe that a good meal brings people together.” The Lumberjills Club invites members of the Maryvale community to connect over a good meal for their next meeting on October 30th. Oh, and don’t forget your best flannel!
Sisters In Christ, led by Bella Marson, has already brought a welcoming feel to our faith community. Maryvale sisters are invited to gather in a faith-based environment to learn from Scripture and learn from one another. This club embraces anyone and everyone looking for a safe place to learn, share, and grow in faith.
The Senior Sunshine Club has already proven to impact communities outside of Maryvale walls. The group will visit senior citizens in nursing homes, improving their quality of life by incorporating Maryvale’s warm sense of community. On other days, club members will partake in activities and crafts for those they serve such as making blankets or holiday cards. Club leader, Myah Brown, says that the goal of Senior Sunshine is to provide, “a welcoming and supportive community that fosters social connections.” Those who join will gain service, learn from the senior citizens they meet, and will be surrounded in a welcoming community. Brown says that Senior Sunshine is, “dedicated to creating a vibrant environment where the elderly can share their lifelong wisdom and enjoy a friend.” This new club is sure to draw community members alike towards such an inspiring experience.
Whether it’s joining in for a pancake meal or brightening a senior citizen’s day, whatever new club students and teachers land on will certainly change their Maryvale (or life!) experience for the better.
